Ethereum's own DeFi ecosystem is up nearly 8% over 30 days even as total value locked across all of DeFi keeps falling in 2026.
Total value locked in Ethereum's DeFi ecosystem reached $41.84 billion as of August 8, up 7.82% over the trailing 30 days, according to on-chain data. The rebound stands out against the backdrop of a sector-wide DeFi contraction that has seen total value locked across all chains fall roughly 39% in 2026, from around $115 billion in January to about $70 billion in early August.
Ethereum's own DeFi TVL had fallen 43% earlier in the year, tracking the broader downturn as weaker token prices, compressed yields and a general risk-off rotation pulled liquidity out of leveraged strategies across the industry. The recent 30-day rebound suggests at least some of that capital is beginning to return, even if the network's TVL remains well below where it started the year. Ethereum still anchors the DeFi ecosystem more broadly, accounting for roughly 53% of total value locked across all chains, a share that has held up even as the absolute dollar figures have shrunk.
The sector-wide decline has not been driven by valuation alone. DeFi recorded 121 hacks in 2026 with a combined $942 million stolen, including two major April exploits, a $295 million breach of Drift Protocol and a $293 million exploit of Kelp DAO, that together accounted for more than half of the year's total DeFi losses. Repeated incidents like these have weighed on governance token valuations and made some depositors more cautious about where they park liquidity, even as headline yields have cooled from the more speculative levels seen in prior cycles.
Not every chain has struggled equally. TRON and Hyperliquid were the only two top-10 chains by TVL to grow their totals in 2026, up 5% and 7% respectively, suggesting that liquidity is consolidating around a smaller number of platforms perceived as more resilient, Ethereum increasingly among them, rather than spreading evenly across the broader DeFi landscape.
Developers building on Ethereum say the rebound reflects renewed confidence in the network's security roadmap following Fusaka, even as they caution that a single quarter of growth is not yet enough to call the broader DeFi contraction over.
