The shift marks a change in leadership at the top of the fast-growing tokenized Treasury market, as institutional demand for on-chain short-term government debt exposure keeps expanding.

Circle's USYC has overtaken BlackRock's BUIDL to become the largest fund in the tokenized U.S. Treasury market, a shift in leadership at the top of one of the fastest-growing segments in on-chain finance.

Tokenized Treasury funds let investors hold exposure to short-term U.S. government debt through blockchain-based tokens rather than traditional fund shares, offering near-instant settlement and composability with other on-chain financial products -- features that have made the category increasingly attractive to both crypto-native funds and traditional institutions looking to earn yield on idle stablecoin or cash balances without leaving the blockchain.

BUIDL, BlackRock's tokenized fund launched in partnership with Securitize, had held the top position in the category for an extended stretch and was widely viewed as a bellwether for institutional appetite toward tokenized real-world assets given BlackRock's scale and brand recognition among traditional finance allocators. USYC's overtake signals that Circle -- best known as the issuer of the USDC stablecoin -- has successfully built out a competing product that institutional and crypto-native users are choosing at increasing scale.

Circle's broader push into tokenized finance infrastructure has accelerated this year. The company recently obtained a New York trust charter, giving it an additional regulatory foothold as it expands beyond stablecoin issuance into adjacent products like tokenized Treasuries. That regulatory posture, combined with USYC's ability to integrate directly with USDC-based DeFi and settlement infrastructure that Circle already operates, may have given the fund a distribution advantage that a fund like BUIDL, built on more general-purpose tokenization rails, does not have to the same degree.

The tokenized Treasury market as a whole has continued expanding rapidly in 2026, with total value locked across competing funds climbing alongside broader institutional interest in earning yield on-chain. The competition between USYC and BUIDL for the top spot is likely to continue as both Circle and BlackRock push to deepen distribution of their respective products across exchanges, custodians and DeFi protocols.
