The decline from $115 billion in January reflects both the broader market correction and a series of major exploits that drained hundreds of millions from lending protocols.

Total value locked across decentralized finance protocols has fallen roughly 39% so far in 2026, sliding to a little over $70 billion from about $115 billion at the start of the year, according to on-chain tracking data spanning more than 450 blockchains.

The decline traces primarily to the broader market correction that followed Bitcoin's October 2025 peak above $126,000, when a sharp liquidation event triggered cascading deleveraging across crypto markets more broadly. DeFi TVL, which measures the dollar value of assets deposited in lending protocols, decentralized exchanges and other on-chain financial applications, tends to fall faster than spot prices during downturns, since declining collateral values force liquidations and reduce the total capital available to remain deposited across the ecosystem.

Security incidents have compounded the decline. Two exploits alone -- a $295 million breach of Drift Protocol and a $293 million exploit of KelpDAO -- together account for more than half of all DeFi losses recorded across 2026, a level of concentration that highlights how a small number of major incidents can meaningfully move aggregate TVL figures even amid a much larger universe of protocols operating without issue. Those two exploits sit alongside a steady stream of smaller incidents that have hit DeFi protocols throughout the year, including the governance exploit at Term Finance and cross-chain messaging attacks affecting bridge protocols like Allbridge.

Despite the aggregate decline, activity has not fallen uniformly across every protocol. Curve's decentralized exchange recently posted a 91.2% jump in weekly trading volume to $1.1 billion, and Uniswap has continued expanding its product lineup with new offerings on Avalanche and a yield-focused "Earn" product routing deposits into curated vaults -- signs that individual leading protocols can still post meaningful growth even as the sector's aggregate TVL figure trends downward.

Whether DeFi TVL stabilizes or continues declining further will likely depend heavily on the trajectory of the broader crypto market recovery currently underway, given how closely TVL figures have historically tracked overall asset prices and risk appetite, alongside the industry's ongoing struggle to meaningfully reduce the frequency of major protocol-level security incidents.
