Visa, Mastercard and Stripe Near Launch of Joint Stablecoin Platform

Coinbase is reportedly exploring participation in the payment giants' unified stablecoin initiative, as each network pursues its own parallel crypto strategy.

Payment giants Stripe, Visa and Mastercard are close to introducing a new joint stablecoin platform, with Coinbase reportedly exploring participation in the initiative, according to people familiar with the discussions.

A unified stablecoin platform backed by three of the world's largest payment networks would mark a significant escalation in traditional finance's direct engagement with stablecoin infrastructure, moving beyond the individual pilot programs and partnerships each company has pursued separately in recent years. Combining Visa and Mastercard's global card network reach with Stripe's merchant-facing payments infrastructure could give the resulting platform a distribution advantage difficult for crypto-native stablecoin issuers to match on their own.

Each of the three companies has been building out its individual crypto strategy in parallel with the joint platform discussions. Visa's own stablecoin settlement program is already running at a $4.5 billion annualized rate, demonstrating meaningful real-world usage rather than purely experimental volume. Mastercard has leaned on its acquisition of BVNK to build out dedicated stablecoin infrastructure capabilities, while Stripe has positioned itself around compliance-as-a-service for crypto businesses, with its on-ramp product functioning as merchant of record for KYC, sanctions screening and licensing -- effectively letting other companies outsource crypto compliance complexity to Stripe's existing infrastructure.

The initiative adds to a broader wave of institutional payment infrastructure convergence around stablecoins this year, including Rain's recently launched Agentic Payments Alliance, a coalition working to guide the development of AI-driven agentic commerce with founding members spanning Visa, Mastercard, Fiserv, Circle, Solana and Remitly. That combination of traditional payment giants and crypto-native infrastructure providers collaborating on shared standards reflects growing recognition that stablecoin payment rails increasingly require coordination across both worlds rather than either side building entirely separate, incompatible systems.

Terms of Coinbase's potential participation in the Visa-Mastercard-Stripe platform, including what role the exchange might play, have not been disclosed. If finalized, the platform would represent one of the most significant traditional payments industry commitments to stablecoin infrastructure to date, potentially accelerating mainstream merchant and consumer stablecoin adoption well beyond its current crypto-native user base.
